Dow Bones

Buried at the top.
Never dug it up.

By our correspondent, standing in a garden

The correspondent declined to say what was in the hole, or whether there had been anything in it.

The method

He buries. He does not retrieve.

The digging is enthusiastic and the burial is thorough. What follows is nothing. He walks away, he sits down, and within the hour the location has left him entirely. This is not a flaw in the process. Retrieval was never part of the process.

The hound standing over an empty hole staring into it

The review

Once a week he checks a hole. It is the wrong hole.

He stares into it for a long time. Nothing is there, and nothing was ever there, because he is looking two feet to the left of where he stood in March. He leaves satisfied. The audit is considered complete.

“The only portfolio that has never been sold is the one nobody can find.”

— attributed to the hound, who did not say it
A vast lawn covered in dozens of small earth mounds with one small hound at its centre

The estate under management. Every mound is a position. None is marked.

Dispatches

From the garden desk

  1. Day 1

    Position opened

A bone is acquired and immediately committed to the ground beneath the hydrangea. Conviction described by witnesses as total.

  2. Day 2

    Position confirmed

The hydrangea is visited. The hound sits beside it for forty minutes. No digging occurs. The visit is logged as a review.

  3. Day 9

    First drawdown

A second bone is buried in what is later established to be the same hole. The first bone is not recovered during this operation.

  4. Day 24

    Coverage initiated

A neighbouring dog is observed digging in the lawn. No action is taken. The hound watches from the step and does not intervene.

  5. Day 61

    Annual review, early

Six holes are inspected. All six are empty. The review concludes that the strategy is working, on the grounds that nothing has been sold.

  6. Today

    Still held

Everything remains buried. Nothing has been located. The line went up regardless, which the hound has not been told about.

Notices

Placed by readers, unverified

Lost

One bone, large, buried spring. Sentimental value. Finder may keep it, as the owner would not recognise it.

Found

Nothing. Six holes checked. All empty. Not accepting further enquiries on this matter.

Wanted

Map. Any map. Of this garden specifically. Will trade a stick believed to be nearby.

For sale

Nothing is for sale. Nothing has ever been for sale. Please stop asking at the fence.

Correction

An earlier notice described a position as “recovered”. It was not recovered. It was walked past.

Appointment

The hound has been appointed to the board of the lawn, effective whenever he next stands up.

The long version

Three columns, no conclusion

Forgetting is a strategy

Every plan to hold through a drawdown fails at the moment the holder remembers they could stop. He cannot remember. The position survives the only threat it ever faced.

The ground does not have a sell button

There is no interface. There is soil, and above the soil there is a dog who has already moved on to the middle distance. Nothing can be executed from there.

Nobody is coming to dig

Not the neighbours, not the committee, not the correspondent. The estate compounds quietly under the grass and everyone involved has agreed, without discussing it, to leave it alone.
